*   Armed Forces Veterans Day observed across the country.

*   Army Day is celebrated on the 15th of January every year in recognition of the taking over of the then Lieutenant General K M Carriappa as the first commander-in-chief of the Indian Army in 1949.

*   At the ongoing National Youth Festival in Hubballi-Dharwad in Karnataka, an attempt will be made to organise a statewide mega Yogathon, to set a new world record. So far 13 lakh students, 12000 teachers and over 8000 educational institutions have registered on www.yogathon.com portal to participate in the event. Karnataka Sports minister Dr. Narayanagowda said that over 13 lakh people will do yoga to enter it in the Guinness Book of World Records.

*   Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar said Election Commission of India is committed to conduct the upcoming Assembly elections in Nagaland in a free, fair and peaceful manner. He also urged the people of Nagaland to pro actively participate in the forthcoming polls. Addressing a Press Conference at Kohima Mr Kumar said, over 30,000 first-time voters will participate in the forthcoming elections.

*   Chief of the Army Staff General Manoj Pande, Air Chief Marshal VR Chaudhari and Chief of Naval Staff Admiral R Hari Kumar attended the 7th Armed Force Veterans Day event in New Delhi. The three Service Chiefs commended the selfless service rendered by the veterans in Nation Building. The event witnessed the release of SAMMAAN magazine, a yearly journal published by the Directorate of Indian Army Veterans covering informative articles and various topics of interest to the veteran community. The Indian Air Force also released the Vayu Samvedna magazine.
Addressing the veterans during the event, Army Chief Manoj Pande, said, the Army is planning to increase the number of empanelled hospitals  for the veterans.
Speaking at the event, Air Chief Marshal VR Chaudhari said, the Directorate of Air Veterans has done creditable work in assisting air veterans with their financial matters and finding placements in the civil sector.
Chief Of Naval Staff, Admiral R Hari Kumar, said care and welfare of the veteran community is a top priority of the Armed forces.

*   Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will preside over 7th Armed Forces Veterans Day at Jaswant Ground in Dehradun Cantonment. He will also launch the 'Soul of Steel Alpine Challenge’ by flagging off a car expedition from Dehradun to Ghamshali located in the Niti Valley. It is a joint adventure sports initiative of the Indian Army and CLAW Global.
The Defence Minister will also dedicate the

Mr Mandaviya added that India has offered Co-WIN to WHO through WHO’s C-TAP initiative. He said it is the need of the hour to focus on long-term measures to build stronger, more resilient health systems that can prevent, prepare for, and respond to future health related challenges.

*   In Badminton, Men's doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty entered the semifinals of the Malaysia Open . The pair beat China’s Liu Yu Chen and Ou Xuan Yi 2-1 in the quarterfinals. Earlier, Satwiksairaj and Chirag lost the opening game, they made a comeback, and won the next two games 22-20 and 21-9, respectively. The duo will now face another Chinese pair of LIANG Wei Keng and Wang Chang  in the semifinals.

*   In Badminton, men's doubles pair of  Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy storm into semifinals of Malaysia Open at Kuala Lumpur.

In other matches, England thrashed Wales 5-0 and Australia beat France 8-0 in their first pool matches after Argentina defeated South Africa 1-0 in the opening match of the tournament. Today, New Zealand will take on Chile while Netherlands will face Malaysia in pool C in Rourkela. In Pool B, Belgium will clash with Korea while Germany will take on Japan in Bhubaneswar.

A Kite Festival was held on the sail of Jal Mahal in Jaipur which witnessed the participation of French Ambassador to India Emmanuel Lenin, among others. Domestic and foreign tourists were welcomed in the traditional way by applying Tilak at the event.

*   Prime Minister Modi flags off world’s longest river cruise from Varanasi to Dibrugarh.

*   Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said that developing countries desire globalisation that does not create climate or debt crisis but brings prosperity and wellbeing of humanity as a whole. The Prime Minister was addressing the concluding session of the Voice of Global South Summit in virtual mode. 
Mr Modi said, the Summit saw the participation of more than 20 developing countries in a span of two days, which is the largest ever virtual gathering of Global South. He said India G20 presidency will attempt to voice the views of Global South. He announced that India will establish a
Global South Centre of Excellence.
The Prime Minister said, India will launch a
Global South Science and Technology initiative to share expertise with other developing nations. He informed that during the Covid pandemic, India's Vaccine Maitri initiative supplied Made in India vaccine to over 100 nations. Mr Modi announced a new Aarogya Maitri Project. Under this project, India will provide essential medical supplies to any developing country affected by natural disasters or humanitarian crisis. <><><>

*   Prime Minister Narendra Modi will flag off the Vande Bharat Express train connecting Secunderabad in Telangana with Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh through video conferencing. The train will be the eighth Vande Bharat Express to be introduced by Indian Railways and will be the first one connecting the two Telugu speaking states of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. The first Vande Bharat Express train was flagged off in February 2019 between New Delhi and Varanasi.
The Vande Bharat Express is equipped with advanced state-of-the-art  passenger amenities and safety features including an indigenously developed
Train Collision Avoidance System - KAVACH.

*   Prime Minister Narendra Modi will flag off Vande Bharat Express train connecting Secunderabad with Visakhapatnam via video conferencing. This will be the eighth Vande Bharat Express and the first to connect Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, covering a distance of around 700 km.

*   Telecom Regulatory Authority of India, TRAI under Ministry of Communications has released a Consultation Paper on ‘License Fee and Policy matters of DTH Services’. The License fee is a non-tax fee levied on a service provider against the privilege of being permitted to carry out a licensed activity. In India, currently the DTH operators are required to pay a license fee of 8 percent of Adjusted Gross Revenue on a quarterly basis to Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. <><><>

*   The 75th Army Day celebration will be held in Bengaluru. This is for the first time that the event is being conducted outside  the National capital. The Chief of the Army Staff, General Manoj Pande will lay a wreath at the Madras Engineering Group War memorial and review the Army Day parade by eight marching contingents including a horse mounted contingent. The Chief of the Army Staff will present gallantry awards for individual acts of bravery and sacrifice. There will also be a fly past by Dhruv and Rudra helicopters. Raksha Mantri Rajnath Singh will be the Chief Guest at an event in Bengaluru where the military tattoo will be on display as part of the Army day.

*   The country observed the 7th Armed Forces Veterans Day. Chief of Defence Staff Lieutenant General Anil Chauhan along with three service Chiefs paid tributes at National War Memorial in New Delhi on the occasion. The day was celebrated at several places across the country.
Addressing an event to mark the Armed Forces Veterans Day  in Dehradun, Raksha Mantri Rajnath Singh lauded the role of ex-servicemen in protecting the sovereignty,  unity, and integrity of the country. He said, it is the duty of the government to ensure the welfare of ex-servicemen as they are the asset of the country.
Mr Singh said, the brave soldiers of the country have contributed immensely in transforming the image of India as a powerful and respected nation across the globe.

*   The festival of Makar Sankranti is being celebrated across the country. Makar Sankranti is also know as Uttarayan which means that the Sun moves towards the north. With the onset of Uttarayan, the effect of cold also starts reducing gradually. The post-harvest festival is celebrated as Pongal in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, Magha Bihu in Assam, Lohri in Punjab and Uttarayan, Maghi and Khichdi in other parts of the country. In Telangana, the three-day festivities began with Bhogi Mantalu, that is, a bonfire lit early in the morning. People along with children came out in large number to light the bonfire at the street corners and cross roads. They burnt their old and unused belongings in the fire as a symbol of getting rid of the bad and evil. People are inviting the Sankranti Lakshmi a symbol of prosperity by decorating their houses traditionally with colourful Rangoli and Mango leaves and flowers.  State Road Transport Corporation and South-Central Railways are operating hundreds of special services for the past few days to facilitate large number of people who are travelling to their native villages. Governor Dr.Tamilisai Sounderarajan and Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao have greeted people on the occasion.

*   The festival of Makar Sankranti is being celebrated across the country. The festival is also known as Uttarayan which marks the movement of the Sun towards the North. It is celebrated to mark the end of the winter season and commemorate the upcoming harvest season. The festivities include sweets made of rice, jaggery, green gram and sesame. On the occasion of Makar Sankranti, the devout took a dip in holy rivers and distributed alms.

*   The World's longest River Cruise MV Ganga Vilas reached Bangla Ghat at Buxar in Bihar. Tourists were welcomed at the ghat.
The tourist's will visit different places at Buxar including War Memorial and Sita Ram Upadhya Museum. The cruise will reach Patna. The cruise will be in Bihar till 22nd of this month.

*   Union Minister for Science and Technology Dr Jitendra Singh launched the Geospatial Hackathon to promote Innovation and Start-Ups in India’s Geospatial ecosystem. Speaking on the occasion in New Delhi, Dr Singh said that the aim of the hackathon is to promote partnerships not only among the public and private geospatial sectors but also to strengthen the  country’s geospatial Start-Up ecosystem.

*   Union Minister for Youth Affairs & Sports, Anurag Singh Thakur has announced the setting up of an indoor stadium in Gomati District of Tripura. He said, 5 crore rupees will be granted for this. The Minister said this while attending Yuba Samvaad-India@2047 at Udaipur in Tripura. Mr. Thakur said, such stadiums, facilitated with different sports disciplines, will also be built in all the eight districts of the state. Later speaking to media, Mr Thakur said, the central government has carried out several developmental works in the field education, health care, road, rail and airport infrastructure.

*   Union Minister Piyush Goyal today said, Food Corporation of India (FCI) should be transformed on a fast track mode so that it continues to help poor and the farmers of the country. He was delivering the inaugural address at the 59th Foundation Day of FCI in New Delhi. Mr Goyal directed the Secretary, Department of Food and Public Distribution to introduce a mechanism wherein whistleblowers may be rewarded.

*   WHO urges South-East Asian countries to take urgent and accelerated measures against measles

*   World Health Organization (WHO) has urged all nations in South-East Asia to take urgent and accelerated measures against measles. The disease is on the rise with nearly nine million children having missed vaccination against it in the past two years. In a press release, Regional Director of WHO South-East Asia Dr Poonam Khetrapal Singh said, there is urgent need to stop and prevent measles outbreaks and accelerate efforts to eliminate the disease.  WHO said, by 2019 measles vaccination coverage reached an all-time high of 94 per cent for the first dose and 83 per cent for the second dose. However, in 2021, it was reduced to 86 per cent for first dose and 76 per cent for second, leaving nine million children unvaccinated for measles and around 5.3 million children partially vaccinated. 

*   World Health Organization urges South-East Asian countries to take urgent and accelerated measures against measles.
